As a Tsuha Global Fellow, Dr. Hana Abebe Gebreselassie will be undertaking a project that addresses pediatric surgical challenges in Ethiopia, with a particular focus on the early diagnosis and enhancement of surgical outcomes for neonates with congenital anomalies. This initiative aims to bridge the significant knowledge gap among the public and healthcare professionals regarding congenital anomalies in newborns. Additionally, it seeks to introduce a neonatal screening program for birth defects to promote early diagnosis and management. These efforts will ultimately contribute to reducing the high neonatal mortality rates associated with congenital anomalies in Ethiopia and support the country's efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3.2.
Cohort 2 Project: Improving Surgical Outcome and Survival of Newborns with Congenital Anomalies
Dr. Hana Abebe Gebreselassie was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She obtained her medical degree from St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College and graduated with “great distinction”. She specialized in Pediatric Surgery at Addis Ababa University and also became a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and South Africa in 2020. Dr. Hana has served as an Assistant Professor of Pediatric Surgery for four years and was recently promoted to the rank of Associate Professor. In 2022, she participated in the Mandela Washington Fellowship at Rutgers University. She has authored over 20 articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented her work at esteemed national, regional and international conferences. Dr. Hana is passionate about public health interventions to improve pediatric surgical care in low-resource settings.
