Research Initiatives

Here are the projects we are currently conducting or hope to pursue together with our partners

Hill Tribe Community Health

We work to support the MFU Center of Excellence for the Hill Tribe Health Research in their effort to conduct ethical and high quality research related to the health of hill tribe people of northern Thailand.  Current work centers around the development a qualitative instrument to explore the cultural context of mental health in these communities.

Infectious Disease Research

Led by faculy from the Schools of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital and OHSU we are working together to investigate infectious disease questions ranging from how eosinophils function in the setting of parasitic disease to how to better predict severe dengue infection in newly infected persons.

Student Electives

We choose a select number of students to participate in a variety of studies to support our mission. These programs are vital to the health and welfare of many communities in southeast asia and oceana.

Cross Border Course

OHSU Global has partnered with Mae Fah Luang University (MFU) to provide a course in Chiang Rai, Thailand, which covers the unique health public health challenges faced in cross border areas. This site is of particular interest because it is the regional hub of the “Golden Triangle” region, which includes portions of Thailand, Myanmar, China, Laos and Vietnam.

Siriraj Clinical Rotation

The OHSU Global Southeast Asia/Oceana Clinical Field Experience provides a mentored global health immersion experience which introduces medical students to the factors contributing to health and disease globally through the lens of experiential clinical learning in a busy referral hospital in Bangkok, Thailand

Tsuha Fellows Program

Inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Challenges, the Hawaii-based Tsuha Foundation has funded an innovative new fellowship program to support the next generation of leaders from countries in Africa, the Indian Ocean Rim and South East Asia.

Volunteer Placements

Our partner in northern Thailand, MFU, is keen to host active or newly retired clinicians to spend at least a month teaching and supporting local nurses and physicians as they treat patients from across northern Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and southern China.
